We had a very competitive first quarter photo contest. Three photos tied for second place, while one photographer had two shots in the top three! Congratulations Latanya Semones, Randy Bohnam, Haley Lorenson and Ross Ellet! A nice set of Fairbanks-themed prizes will be headed your way very soon.

You can enter up to five photos from Fairbanks, Denali, Arctic or Interior Alaska, to be judged in our second quarter competition. Let us know if there is anything we can do to make the competition better next time around.

Lance Mackey: Alaska Dog Mushing Legend

When I saw this video and story posted on the KTUU.com today, I couldn’t help but watch. Even after monitoring the sport closely during every Mackey win in the Yukon Quest and Iditarod, I am still amazed. Apparently the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame is as well. Here is a terrific retrospective on the Fairbanks musher that has made – and continues to make – dog mushing history.

Great Fairbanks Northern Lights Video

This video is made from a series of over 350 northern lights photos taken in Fairbanks. This method seems to capture the movement of the aurora a little better than the much more common time-lapse videos.

A “Shelf” of Fairbanks Issuu Publications

Issuu is one of our favorite services for presenting Fairbanks publications. In just a few minutes we can upload an entire project and have a beautiful, easy to use online magazine, which can be searched, clicked and zoomed in upon (if that makes sense). One of the latest Issuu features is the shelf, which allows publishers to display their entire collection. Ours is shown below; just click the one you want to see the full version.

We publish our Meeting Planner Guide, Visitors Guide and Winter Guide online with Issuu, with plans to do even more in the future. Check out the service if you do publishing of any sort – we’re certain you’ll be pleased. 2009 GCI Open North American Championships

Some of the best sprint-mushers in the world came racing down the Chena River just outside our offices this afternoon. I thought you might like to have a look, so I grabbed a camera and headed down the river bank just in time to catch a few of the teams. Here’s how things looked on day 1 of the race:

The GCI Open North American Championships begin in the heart of downtown Fairbanks and have been run since 1946. The field of 18 this year includes many former champions and is continuing throughout the weekend. Stop by the starting line this Saturday or Sunday on Second Avenue, and if you have a chance walk down the street to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and say hello.

A Very Moosey Morning

How many other places on earth can you see moose regularly from your downtown office window? In a ten minute period this morning we saw two moose wandering across the Chena River just outside the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. Here are a few of the photos we captured:

Other exciting things happening around the office this morning include sending e-mails, making phone calls, doing research and other work on all things Fairbanks-marketing-related. (We didn’t take pictures of that!)

The world’s longest, toughest, snowmobile race!

I was checking the standings for the Tesoro Iron Dog in preparation for the finish in Fairbanks on Saturday. Their homepage links a video of the new Iron Dog song, which is terrific. It tells the story of the entire race and has some great behind-the-scenes photos. View and listen below.
